I have always been a Lincoln man, but a customer of mine wants to give me a 1957 Imperial. I have always heard that the A/C system in the Imperial used R/22 which was not an adequate refrigerant for automobiles. I freeze my self in the 1956 Lincoln with R/12. The Imperial, I am told, had to have the compressor rebuilt constantly because the lubribcation associated with the R/22 was not compatible with automobile applications and burnt out the compressor bearings. Can these cars with factory A/C using R/22 be reliable, or do they have to be converted to some other refrigerant? I am looking for a dependable A/C system since I live in South Florida where the outside temp is over 105F with humidity factored in. Please advise.
